At a young age, was nearly killed by his mother and took to the streets, where he was found and taken in by Kenshin and Kaoru. He became a student and adoptive son much like Yahiko. He watched Rumiko, who had been his best friend, leave as a girl and three years later return to Japan as a woman, on the arm of someone else. When Rumiko made it clear she had no interest in him, Asaharu angrily left the dojo to live at the Akabeko for a while. When Rumiko was near-killed, he returned to the dojo to care for her, and be strung along for six years. In the middle of a tearful fight, Asaharu told Rumiko he didn't care about anything by making her happy, and was rewarded with the words he'd been hoping for. He and Rumiko were married as soon as they could be after that. When Kaoru died, Rumiko and Asaharu together cared for the dojo and carried on the Kamiya style.
